What to do around Lake Geneva when it rains? (Complete guide, 45 minutes from Messery)
What if rain was an opportunity to discover Lake Geneva in a different way? From Messery, the Relais du Léman offers you a front-row seat to explore the Bas-Chablais and neighbouring Switzerland in comfort. From historical heritage to wellness breaks and cultural outings less than 45 minutes away, we have selected the best places for you to enjoy your day, whatever the weather.

1. The “We learn things (without getting bored)” option
Now is the perfect time to discover what we don’t take the time to see when the sun is shining.
The gems of Sciez – 5 minutes away
It is the neighbouring town, and it hides two treasures to keep you busy on rainy days:
The Museum of Prehistory and Geology: Right next door. Here you can learn how the Alps were formed and about the lives of the first people who lived by the lake. It’s fun, visual and you learn lots without even realising it.
The Fire Brigade Museum: A huge hangar filled with red fire engines, old hand pumps and uniforms. For children who dream of being firefighters, it’s paradise. It’s big, covered and impressive.
Ripaille Castle (Thonon) – 20 minutes away
It’s a must-see. If the gardens are wet, the interior of the castle is worth a visit. Here you can discover the history of the Dukes of Savoy, the old kitchens…
- The bonus: There’s wine! The estate produces its own white wine. A little tasting for the parents always warms the heart, doesn’t it?
- Friendly advice: If the sun decides to break through the clouds (it happens quickly here!), keep our list of the best summer activities in Haute-Savoie handy so you can change your plans in a flash.
2. Geneva: The neighbour who saves the day (30 min)
You’re just a stone’s throw from the border, so make the most of it! Geneva is full of incredible museums (and permanent collections are often free).
- Natural History Museum : Life-size animals, dinosaurs… It’s huge and children love it. It’s the number one activity for local families when it rains.
- Patek Philippe Museum: Feast your eyes on watches that are true works of art.

3. The “Get wet, but stay warm” option
If you’re going to get wet, you might as well do it in water that’s 28°C, right? While our favourite spots for swimming on the shores of Lake Geneva are more “natural”, here we’re aiming for comfort.
- Cité de l’Eau (Publish): 25 minutes from the campsite. There are indoor pools, a jacuzzi and slides. The children burn off energy and sleep well at night. Everyone wins.
- Vitam Parc (Neydens): A little further away (40 minutes), but this is the temple of indoor leisure: huge water park, climbing walls, shopping malls… You can spend the whole day there.
4. Staying at the campsite: Cocooning mode activated
Honestly, staying at the campsite when it rains has its charm. At the Relais du Léman, we have everything you need to make you feel at home.
Chez Titi
Don’t feel like cooking in your van or mobile home? Head to the Snack-Bar Chez Titi. It’s got that camping vibe we love: no fuss, just good food. A tasty pizza, a generous burger or a tray of chips is the perfect remedy for the grey weather. Sit down, chat and laugh. This is often where neighbours become friends.

Your cosy little nest
Our mobile homes have covered terraces. You know that little pleasure of reading a book outside while listening to the rain fall, all while staying perfectly dry? That’s simple happiness. And for the “geeks” or those who want to plan the next day’s hike: Wi-Fi is available (in chalets and mobile homes).
For large groups who are afraid of stepping on each other’s toes, take a look at our Large 5-bedroom chalet. There, you’ll have enough space to play a giant game of Monopoly without bumping into anyone!
What about the children?

The Kids’ Club (ages 6-10) doesn’t close at the first drop of rain! Our activity leaders have plenty of tricks up their sleeves to keep the little ones entertained indoors (crafts, games, etc.). You can relax.
FAQ: Your questions about bad weather
Do I need a vignette to go to Geneva? Yes, if you take the Swiss motorway. But from Messery, you can reach the centre of Geneva by driving along the lake or via national roads without a vignette. It takes a little longer, but it’s free! Consider using the park-and-ride facilities (P+R) at the entrance to the city.
What to do with your dog when it rains? Museums often don’t allow dogs. However, a walk in the forest (such as Laou) under the trees offers natural shelter. And when you return to the campsite, dry your dog’s paws thoroughly before settling down on the covered terrace!
Is there a cinema or bowling alley nearby? Yes! Thonon-les-Bains has a cinema and a bowling alley. It’s a 25-30 minute drive away. Perfect for a fun evening out.
Rain never lasts long in Haute-Savoie. While waiting for the sun to come out, take advantage of these moments to discover the region in a different way. Ready to book your stay (with or without sunshine)?
